Middle Mountain Momma

Five TBLers headed down to Douthat State Park this past weekend to suffer through the long climbs of Middle Mountain Momma. Mike Buchness started off the day early in the XXC for 40 miles through Douthat State Park, out into the George Washington National Forest, and back for a few more climbs through the state park. Even with a few crashes, Mike finished 23rd in the overall field.

At noon, the regular XC field went off for 21 miles and over 4,000 feet of climbing. Even with the rain the day before, the trails were in excellent condition, with the race director rating them as a 9 out of 10.

Marc Genberg was the first TBLer to spot on the course. With the most difficult parts of the course behind him, he was ready to cruise into the finish well ahead of the Master Sport Men 45-54 pack, when an unfortunate flat only 5 miles from the finish derailed his day. However, even with the flat, he still managed a respectable 3rd place finish in his age group. Unfortunately, Marc was scored with the 19-34 Men and did not get to claim his podium.

John Mead was not far behind Marc, and despite stopping to offer some electrolytes to another racer withering in pain on the trail from cramps, he still finished 5th in the Master Sport Men 19-34.

Karen Talley Mead was the next one to cross the line, with a 3rd place Expert Female finish. First and second place in this category had some excitement, as it was a sprint finish to the end.

Even though Julie Guy started in the last wave, minutes behind everyone else, she still came in shortly behind the rest of the team and their head start with a strong finish and 1st place in Master Sport Women.

Overall it was a great day for the team, with lots of epic riding over some of Virginia best trails, excellent conditions, and several podium finishes. I think we will definitely see some TBL presence in Douthat again next year.
